The erasure of some shapes may cause other shapes on top of it to gravitate directly downwards in their column. When this happens, the shapes disappear, give the player a sum of points to add to their score, and subsequently make empty space on the grid for other shapes. The general aim for all game-modes is to align two or more of identical shapes in any fashion as long as they lie adjacent to each other inside a 13x7 grid. The falling shapes used in gameplay include a red tetrahedron, a pink cross, a green gemstone, an orange octahedron, a white gemstone, a yellow tetrahedron and a blue sphere. Sonic the Hedgehog, controlled by the player, must arrange randomly selected falling clusters of shapes of the same variety to align on a grid in order to erase them. It also features a large cast of other characters such as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, and the Chao creatures.Ī falling block puzzle video game, it became available for download in Japan in 1991 and in Brazil in 1995 on Sega Meganet, a Japan-exclusive Sega Mega Drive add-on released in 1990 and later released in Brazil in 1995 that enabled players to download a select library of games via dial-up internet. However, the telegraph was a highly successful system at that time still, its dot and dash Morse code had limitations for sending and receiving one message at a time. When Graham Bell started his work with the electric signal at that time telegraph had already been invented 30 years ago. So, that was the basic reason for the success of Graham Bell's invention of the telephone, as it was come by his improvement of the telegraph. The telephone and the telegraph both are wire-based systems. On the basis of this expertise, he started the work on harmonic telegraph. He became trained by his experiments as well as by his teaching to deaf students. The device was known as ' visible speech'. He invented a device that was earlier made by his father for teaching deaf students. He did many tests as well as experiments on electricity and sound that were influenced by the work of Helmholtz. He shifted to Paris, Ontario, in 1870, and there he opened a workshop. Afterward, he continued his experiment with sound and speech. But after sending the report of his work to Alexander Ellis, he came to know through him that the same experiment was already done by a German scientist Hermann Von Helmholtz. Further, in 1863, inspired by Sir Charles Whetstone's Automator, Bell with his brother made his own Automator, which was based on Baron Wolfgang Von Kempelen's work. This device helps the farmer to a great extent. When he was twelve years old, he saw the problems of the farmers in the field, and then he made an instrument with which the husks of the wheat could remove quickly. He was a thinker as he focused on the problem and tried to find out the solution. Since form his childhood, Bell was a very curious as well as a troubleshooter. Bell's early experiments with sound and speech He had a wide knowledge of sound and its nature that made him a teacher of deaf as well as also inspired him for making a device like a telephone. Graham Bell's mother and wife both were deaf, which influenced his life most, as it was the basic reason that he did research on hearing and speech. There he met with his wife, Mabel Hubbard, who was also a deaf student, and later they got married in 1877. Later at the age of 26, he got the designation of professor in elocution and speech at the University of Boston without having a university degree. There he taught about the techniques of speech as well as vocal physiology.Īnd very soon, several deaf students have shown their interest and got admission to his school. Later he started a school for the deaf in Boston in 1872. He attended Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh. At the age of 16, he began studying the mechanics of speech. And due to his family, academic background in elocution Graham Bell was also interested in the same as he did his study in the same subject. Even his brother was also associated with elocution and speech. His grandfather was a teacher of elocution, and his father was also a professor of elocution and speech at Edinburgh University. Graham Bell was born on 3 rd March 1847 in Scotland. Afterward, there was a legal battle between them over the invention of the telephone, but Graham Bell won in the end. However, both went on the same day on 7 th March 1876 to the patent office, but Alexander Graham Bell went one hour before Elisha Gray, and he patented his telephone first. The device that could transmit speech electrically was the telephone. Both the scientist developed this device independently. In the 1870s, an instrument was developed by two scientists named Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell. But on 11th June 2002, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution for honoring Meucci's contributions and work for the telephone. As a result, his role in the invention of the telephone was overlooked. He filed an announcement for the invention of his design of the talking telegraph, but due to some problems, he could not renew his caveat. It was the year 1849 when an Italian immigrant named Antonio Meucci began to create a design for a talking telegraph or telephone. The answers should be at a level of precision such that multiple teams are unlikely to estimate the same answer (the spreadsheet will cope with this, but it makes the betting part slightly less interesting). The answers should be broadly estimable based on general knowledge of the topic (i.e.The answers shouldn’t be things that anyone present will explicitly know. The answers need to be on a continuous scale.įor good questions I think the following also apply:.The basic requirements for questions that make the game work are: This makes it more relevant and engaging, but does take some effort to prepare. I’d recommend writing custom EA-related questions for the game. Another useful additional step to make this a fair process is to start with a different team each time you go around the room to gather answers. Although I’d recommend still asking the teams to write down and commit to their answer in advance, as there is some incentive to modify both answers and bets once you know how other teams are answering/betting. The game rules suggest that all answers and bets should be written down and handed in before being made public, however this can be difficult in a large venue and I find it easier to just ask around the teams and type them into the spreadsheet live. This means that a seven question game typically takes around 90 minutes to complete, once you account for gathering answers and stepping between questions. I’d suggest allowing closer to 5 minutes for robust team discussion on each of these steps. With EA-type mindset teams and good questions each of these stages can take substantially longer than the one minute suggested in the rules. Each question consists of two stages, estimating the answer, and then betting on answers. It allows up to seven teams, and I would suggest aiming for close to this number, with teams as small as two people if necessary. It functions exactly the same way as the board version but is best displayed on a large screen so that all teams can see it. MechanicsĪlthough the game was originally developed as a board game, with each participant playing individually, there is a version developed as an Excel spreadsheet to allow large groups to play. By writing custom EA relevant questions it also allows participants to flex some of their knowledge and others to connect with useful EA metrics. In an EA context, the game offers an opportunity to practise creating quick Fermi estimates and to work on judgement calibration. Wits & Wagers is a trivia-based game that involves both answering questions, and betting on the other player's answers, with points awarded for being correct in either or both. I’ll lay out why I believe the game is relevant in an EA context, the mechanics of playing the game in a large group, how to write good custom EA questions, and some reflections on playing the game at recent retreats. They have consistently gone down well, with several people noting them as a highlight of the retreat. We have played the game at every yearly retreat for the past five years, with me writing questions and hosting for three of them, and playing as part of a team in the other two. I'd like to share my experience in both running and playing the game Wits & Wagers at EA retreats in New Zealand.
